Many of the street kids in Delhi ran away from their homes (because of violence or extreme poverty) and came to the city in order to earn a living. Living on the streets, not only do the kids have to face health issues, violence and hunger on a daily basis, but they are also exposed to harmful substances: 80% of indian street kids take drugs.
At the heart of Old Delhi, an NGO called Salaam Baalak helps these homeless orphans by giving them a place to sleep, play and learn. My friends and I have volunteered there twice, and it was a heart-warming experience.
We once gave the kids Happy Meals, and they loved them! (who doesn't..)
